Infertility Specialists

When to see a specialist?

No referral is usually needed to see a Reproductive Endocrinologist/ Infertility specialist (except by some insurance plans), so you may choose to see a specialist as soon as you have concerns about your fertility. Many studies demonstrate that care by specialists is more likely to result in pregnancy to lower overall cost. In fact, over 70% of couples who seek specialty care will conceive. Any individual couple's chance is dependent upon the cause(s) of their infertility.

In general you should seek an infertility specialist if:

  1. You are a female less than 35 years old with a history of unprotected intercourse without conception for at least 1 year.
  2. Your are a female 35-39 years old with a history of unprotected intercourse without conception for at least 6 months.
  3. Females 40 years old and older should see an infertility specialist right away.
  4. Women with history of 2 or 3 spontaneous miscarriages.
  5. Women who have had more than 4 Clomid (fertility medicine) treatment cycles.
  6. No menstrual cycle for more than 6 months.
  7. Men with abnormal semen analysis.
  8. Interest in Preimplantation Genetics (PGD); history of genetic disorders (few examples):
    • Cystic fibrosis
    • Sickle cell disease
    • Fragile X Syndrome
    • Marfans
    • Tay-Sachs
    • Thalassemia
    • Duchenne muscular dystrophy
